Read something very moving on my insta feed yesterday and wanted to share it.
But first a bit of context... starting with the Cascade compilation(which really I wanted to promote anyway.) This is the third compilation from OML and it's participants.
OML? Open Music Lab: is a Berlin-based non-profit, committed to providing free spaces, workshops and opportunities so that music-making can become accessible for all. I really cannot big them up enough. I first connected with OML in the middle of Berlin's cold depressing winter lockdown. From the initial meeting of sharing music over youtube and zoom, to meeting IRL at workshop and events months later, I've been thankful for their presence as I navigated my way as a newbie in the city. I’ve attended numerous free workshops covering a range of subjects, and met new friends in the process. The team behind the project are also super lovely. Big big ups.
In the summer of 2022, OML collaborated with Native Instruments to offer yet another course, and this compilation is the outcome. Personal favourite track has to be Vata Morgana’s ‘’skrelly boom’’ after replaying it about 10 times on the first listen.
King Sleepy’s track ’4 Me’ was recently played out at Panorama bar, and he shared the moving story via instagram…
‘’4 me’ is a track about being true to oneself and pursuing things that make us happy. ‘4 me’ features a looping vocal sample of a dear friends of mine, Sam. Sam sadly passed away around 3 years ago from cancer, aged 32. We made music together from a young age, and he was the person who believed in me the most… and encouraged me to continue making music. When he died it brought back a lot of memories of these times and was also a tragic and powerful reminder of the brevity of life. 3 months later I moved to Berlin to pursue my dream of making music more regularly.’
Kikelomo (@_kikeiomo_) debuted the track in Panorama Bar in December.
‘Having the experience of hearing a track I made in that place, particularly one with Sam’s voice on, was an emotional experience for me.’ (@k.i.n.g.s.l.e.e.p.y)
I can imagine how beautiful and powerful that moment must have been, and it got me thinking about how we kind of forget that behind every track is a story. When we hear certain tracks played out that especially move us and we don’t know why, maybe we are connecting to the story behind it that we aren’t even conscious of… anyway, that’s just me getting all whimsical and maybe a bit far-fetched… but my re-relisation of each track having a story gives music yet another dimension of godly beauty!
